古来ベンガルの地で織られ、世界中の人々を魅了してきた極細番手のベンガル綿布をモスリンといいます。現在のバングラデシュのダッカ地方が主産地として知られてきました。しかし、モスリンに欠かせない短繊維（長繊維と説明してきましたが、短繊維であったことがわかりました）の原種がほぼ絶えており（博物館に残るのみ）、その生育地であった沿岸部が長年の侵食によって失われ、極細番手を織ったことのない織り師が大半の今日、当時と同じ仕様のものを復元するのはかなり難しいとされています（試験的な再現は行われています）。
